How do you do, my fellow gay fucks. I got bored and decided to postpone the Dark Souls review. Instead, here's a review for a game that I've poured quite a bit of time into: Danganronpa V3!
INTRODUCTION
Okay, gamers, like last time, I gonna be straight to the point: I really adore this trilogy (I mean, it's technically a quadrilogy if you include Ultra Despair Girls, but I'm talking about main games, I might talk about Ultra Despair Girls in the future). Most of the characters are great, most of the trial are enjoyable, and all the executions are so fucking ridiculous, you really can't help but enjoy them. I will most definitely talk about the other games further down the line, but for now, time to head the fuck to space.
STORY
I'm not going to spend that long on the story, because I have more important things to talk about. The story here is kinda similar to the other games: 16 students with Ultimate talents are trapped in a place and are forced to partake in a killing game by Monokuma, a sadistic fucking TEDDY BEAR. Last chapter comes around, they just find out the mastermind, sed mastermind gets punished, credits. However, this game needed to mix up the formula somehow, so what did the devs do? They had you playing as a female protagonist (Kaede/Kaedead) and had that protagonist be the first blackened, thus getting them executed and making you play as a male protagonist (Shuichi Cryhara) for the third fucking time. This was a pretty good twist, and I'm gonna commend the devs for keeping this factoid covered up. All the screenshots on the digital shops are from the first chapter, but nowhere past the midway point of the first trial, Kaedead is featured front and center on the box, with Cryhara behind her, and on the Steam page, one of the tags is 'Female Protagonist'. I'm not going to say much on the ending, 1. Because this is semi spoiler-free, and 2. Because every fucker's already said so much about, that whatever I say is gonna be called stealing. Let's move on from the story and get to the epic gameplay.
GAMEPLAY
Alright, so in the game, there are 3 sections of gameplay:
1. Free time, where you walk around the academy, and chat with your fellow students.
2. Investigations, where you try to find clues (called Truth Bullets) before the trial starts
3. The trials themselves, where you partake in a series of debates and minigames in order to figure out the culprit, which at the end, rewards you with a sweet, sweet execution.
I guess to start, I'll talk about Free Time. During Free Time, you can do a wealth of shit (like maybe four things). You can sleep if you want to be an antisocial asshole, you can look around for the academy for small Monokuma's, some of them being hidden in the trials, you can mess around in the casino (after chapter 1) earning tokens to not only buy gifts for your fellow classmates, but also buy backgrounds for the Monopad (Hooray) and skills to use during the trials (I'll talk about those when I talk about trials). You can also talk to your fellow students to raise your friendship up with them. I might as well take this time to talk about our 16 meat bags in this game. They are as follows,
Kaede Akamatsu, the Ultimate Pianist
Shuichi Saihara, the Ultimate Detective
Miu Iruma, the Ultimate Thot/Inventor
K1-B0, the Ultimate Robot
Rantaro Amani, the Ultimate ???
Kokichi Oma, the Ultimate Supreme Leader
Maki Harukawa, the Ultimate Child Caregiver/Assassin
Tsumugi Shirogane, the Ultimate Cosplayer
Ryoma Hoshi, the Ultimate Tennis Player/Prisoner
Tenko Chabashira, the Ultimate Neo-Aikido Master
Gonta Gokuhara, the Ultimate Entomologist
Korekiyo Shinguji, the Ultimate Anthropologist
Angie Yonaga, the Ultimate Artist
Himiko Yumeno, the Ultimate Magician
Kirumi Tojo, the Ultimate YOU'RE TOO SLOW/Maid
and Kaito Momota, the Ultimate Astronaut
Overall, a solid lineup of characters, even if they had to dig through the bottom of the barrel for a few of the character's talents (*Cough Cough* Gonta *Cough Cough*). But the main reason to talk to a character (aside from them being your favorite) is to max out your friendship with them to get their skill to use in the trials. In order to do this, you must talk to them or give them a gift you think that the character would like. It is worth it (most of the time) to get the skill they have. For example, maxing out friendship with Kokichi gives you the skill 'Kind Lie', which makes the punishment for messing up a lie less severe (I'll talk about lies later you assholes, so stay calm).
Now we're on to part two of the gameplay loop, the Investigations. Whenever a meat bag gets game-ended, an announcement from the Monokubs (until chapter 5, when they've all been game-ended, then they're back for chapter 6), who are Monokuma's little shits, telling you that it's time to investigate before the trial begins. What follows is a goose chase in a small set few areas where you need to investigate practically every speck of dust and talk to everyone to get Truth Bullets. I think my favorite investigation was the one for the third trial. Now in these games, the third chapter is a 2-for-1 deal of dead teens, where you must investigate two dead corpses, how enticing. I thought the double murder in the first game was pretty good, and I thought the double murder in the second game was pretty fucking stupid. So what is so unique about this one? Well, the second murder actually happens in the heat of the moment, while everyone's investigating, which is kinda cool, meaning that whoever was in the room when it happened are the prime suspects, including yourself! (not really.) But other than that, there really isn't much to these parts of the game.
Now, the big meat and potatoes of these games are the trials, and this game definitely hits the nail over the head with this entry. These trials are just as fun as ever, making them a fucking blast. While most of the mainstay parts of the trial are back, there are a few new bits for us to enjoy. I guess I'll talk about them now
Nonstop Debates, where you must shoot down the false statements (yellow text), sometimes shooting the blue text to consent with it, with your truth bullets, sometimes needing to turn them into lie bullets to shoot down the false statements, while also using the silencer to shoot down white noise
Hangman's Gambit 3.0, where you must select the right letters in order to spell the phrase
Rebuttal Showdown, where you must cut through your opponent's words and use the correct truth blade to slice through the false statements
Mass Panic Debates, which are pretty much Nonstop Debates, but three people are speaking at once. You must shoot down the false statements, while also using the silencer to shut people up who are speaking over everyone, locking the other two boxes until you destroy it.
Psyche Taxi, where you must drive through the letterboxes and answer the questions they spell correctly, all while avoiding other cars
Mind Mine, where you break blocks and select the correct image that is revealed
Argument Armant, which is a rhythm game where you must press the right buttons at the right time, ending off with you pressing the four buttons in the right order to piece together the phrase.
and Closing Argument, where you must put the correct pieces of a comic in their places in order to show the order of events in that case
Those are all the minigames in the trials, so now why don't I give my opinion on each chapter's trial, before I move onto the bonus postgame shit.
Trial 1. Pretty unique for a first trial with the twist and all
Trial 2. This one was pretty forgettable for me, aside from the body discovery and Kirumi's breakdown before the execution
Trial 3. Seesaw Effect.
Trial 4. This was probably my second favorite in the whole game for how you have to use video game logic like loading zone and world looping to find the culprit
Trial 5. Probably my favorite since nobody even knows who got murdered, not even Monokuma! Plus there's somebody in an Exisal, but nobody knows if it's Kokichi or Kaito in the damn thing
Trial 6. HOOOOOO BOOOOY, THAT ENDING THOUGH
Now it's time to talk about the postgame bullshit. First up is Salmon Team. It's a motherfucking dating sim. This is pretty similar to the other modes from previous games, but rather than a time limit for what Monokuma wants, it's a time limit for two students to fall in love. It's as fucking stupid and ridiculous as it sounds. There's also Ultimate Talent Development Plan, which is honestly pretty damn fun. The whole premise is that it's a board game where you must develop your student of over the span of three years, while also trying to make it back to the start to partake in the final exam, which is a motherfucking RPG battle using the skills you bought throughout the in-game year. There are also these friendship squares, where your character interacts with characters from the other games. There's even a board based off of the Danganronpa 3 anime, with custom sprites and art, which is pretty nice. However, there is one mode I haven't talked about... Monokuma's Test. This is unlocked after developing a certain amount of characters in knock-off Fortune Street, and is a multi-floor, super difficult RPG where you fight monsters and earn gold to unlock new characters. That's all for gameplay, now let's move on to the best time of day, PRESENTATION & SOUNDTRACK
PRESENTATION AND SOUNDTRACK
So the presentation and soundtrack. Let's start with the art. It's great. What, were you expecting me to go super in-depth and give a full fucking analysis? No, just see the cover image of this post and you'll see what I mean about the art being great. As for the soundtrack, it's amazing. Honestly, Masafumi Takada has become one of my favorite composers ever. I just love the way he can make music sound ominous yet bumping at the same time, and I think this game might have my favorite soundtrack of the whole damn series.
CLOSURE
So overall, I love this game. The characters are mostly great, the trials are a blast, the postgame content is pretty meaty, I love the art, and the soundtrack is incredible. Anyway, thank you all for reading this not as long but still kinda long review. I don't know what the fuck to write next, so give me ideas. Anyway, thank you for reading, and stay gay.
FINAL SCORE: 9/10
